Half of the world’s population is female and women are actively participating in political, economic and social development across the globe. However, women are still subjected to men in many ways and still face entrenched inequality. We experience the distinct dichotomy between masculinity and femininity in everyday life and patriarchy is too dominant in most societies. The patriarchal system places masculinity above femininity, and men are privileged as a result. Such gender inequalities between men and women are conspicuous particularly in the discipline of International Relations (IR). One of the examples that show the discipline of IR is gendered is the above essay question itself. The question, ‘to what extent is the discipline of International Relations gendered’, indicates clearly that IR is androcentric since if IR is gender-neutral, this question will not be asked. Another example is the question which is raised by Steans, `where are the women in international relations?(2006:1) This question confirms that women are under-represented in the academic discourse of IR.
